Destination guide
In Koh Tao, beginners learn to scuba dive just off the beach in clear blue water. Shallow bays sit close to coral reefs and deeper rock sites, with many dive spots only minutes from the main beaches. Many dive schools stand along long, sandy main bays. Their regular courses and boat trips give the island a calm rhythm around the water. Snorkeling happens nearer the shore, over coral gardens where small fish move above the sand. Away from the beach, steep jungle slopes rise quickly, with narrow paths connecting small villages and quieter coves. At John-Suwan viewpoint, a short climb ends with a wide view over twin turquoise bays and dark green hills.

At a glance
Young, social, and easygoing, with slow beach days, sunset drinks in Sairee, and enough solo travelers around that meeting people feels simple.
Three to five nights gives time for a dive course, snorkel trip, beach time, and one or two quieter bays.
Skip it if beach days, diving, and snorkeling sound dull, or if ferries, seasickness, steep roads, and a small island feel will annoy you.
