Destination guide
In Kanchanaburi, family groups and schoolchildren visit the main war cemetery beside everyday shops and motorbikes. Nearby museums and memorials explain how Allied prisoners of war and Asian workers built the Death Railway through this hot, wild region. Beside the river, floating raft houses, simple hostels, and small bars give the town a relaxed base between visits to parks and sites. Erawan National Park, north of town, has tiered waterfalls, pale blue pools, and forest trails shaded by tall trees. During rainy months, paths to the upper tiers become muddy and slippery, which slows movement and keeps many pools quiet. On the River Kwai, long-tail boats glide past raft houses and under the bridge, where jungle banks and memorial buildings stand side by side.

Slow mornings, river light, market meals, then a serious afternoon at memorials or falls. Nights stay low-key, with a couple of bars.
Give it 2 to 3 nights, enough for town history, the bridge area, and one full day at Erawan or Sai Yok.
Skip it for party nights, beach mood, or easy sightseeing without planning. The best bits outside town take time, transport, and some patience.
